— A 73-year-old Avon Park man was taken to Florida Hospital Heartland with life-threatening injuries after a two-vehicle accident in Avon Park at 11:43 a.m. Sunday.

Tony Thompson was going south in a Ford Mustang in the center lane of U.S. 27 approaching Winthrop Street, the Florida Highway Patrol says.

Graham Schaffer, 54, of Australia was traveling northbound in the outside northbound lane of U.S. 27 when the Mustang started to go in a southeasterly direction and collided with the front side of his Toyota Corolla, FHP adds

The Mustang then veered east into Winthrop Street and collided with a building on the north-eastern corner of U.S. 27 and Winthrop, FHP adds.

The Corolla rotated counterclockwise and overturned on its right side, before coming to final stop in an upright position, FHP adds. Schaffer did not have any injuries, they say. Thompson was listed in critical condition as of 3 p.m. Sunday.
