Passenger turns ride into computer theft, authorities say

LAKE PLACID-A 25-year-old Lake Placid reportedly stole a computer bag with an HP laptop in it from the car of a man who was giving him a ride, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office said.

Jacquill Terrell Williams, 135 Vision St., Lake Placid, was charged with grand theft recently from the December incident, authorities said.

The victim was giving Williams a ride, a sheriff's office report states, when he got out of the car with the victim's computer bag and ran around a house in Lake Placid.

The victim, who said he didn't know Williams well, could not identify him in a photo lineup but a witness who was sitting on the porch of the house Williams ran around ID'ed him, the report adds.

Man holds phone, charged with theft and extortion

LAKE PLACID-A 26-year-old Lake Placid, who reportedly held another man's cell phone until he paid him $100, was charged with larceny/grand theft and dealing with stolen property, authorities said.

The victim told authorities he lost his cell phone early January and tracked it down to an apartment in Lake Placid, a Highlands County Sheriff's Office report said.

The suspect, Demetrius Whitfield, 108 Arron Drive, Apt. 7, Lake Placid, denied he had the phone, the report states.

A witness told authorities that Whitfield told her he would return the victim's phone only after he paid him $100, the report said. Authorities added the witness said she, another family member and the victim met Whitfield at a boat ramp, where the victim got his phone back after he paid the money, a report adds.

Bicyclist charged with drug possession after traffic stop

LAKE PLACID-A 31-year-old bicyclist, who was stopped by a Highlands County Sheriff's Office deputy April 11 for not having proper lighting on his bike, ended up being charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana and drug equipment, which are misdemeanor charges, authorities said.

The deputy reportedly found the drugs during a pat down of Anthony Gernard Moore, of 130 EA Smith, Lake Placid, a report said.
