Man accused of stabbing girlfriend

AVON PARK - An Avon Park man accused of attempting to stab his girlfriend in the chest and punching the woman's 8-year-old daughter on her mouth was arrested Saturday, according to a report released April 5.

Reynaldo Diaz Ruiz, 27, no street address given, Avon Park, was arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and child abuse.

The girlfriend reported that Ruiz was drinking and became violent, the report said. She told deputies that Ruiz attacked her with a small silver knife and he tried to thrust the knife into the center of her chest, the report said.

The woman said that when her daughter tried to help, Ruiz punched the daughter in the mouth, the report said.

Eventually, the report said, the girlfriend grabbed the knife from Ruiz, the report said.

Man accused of assaulting another man

AVON PARK - The distant family relationship between two men likely became more distant following an incident on April 4, according to a report released Monday.

One man reported that another man, who he described as a distant non-blood relative, entered his residence uninvited, pushed him to the ground and threatened to retrieve a gun and kill him, the report said.

Joshua Barrington Lana Hilton, 23, 1206 Odessa Ave., Avon Park, was arrested April 4 by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with assault and burglary with assault or battery.

The victim said he believed that his relationship with Hilton's recent ex-girlfriend prompted the attack.

Man arrested on drug charges

LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man was arrested on drug charges less than a year after he was released from prison where he served time on drug charges, according to records released Monday.

Semmie Obrad Turner, 38, 100 Robinson St., Lake Placid, was arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with possession of cocaine, possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana and possession of drug equipment.

After searching Turner's residence and finding cocaine, $590 in currency in a safe, a digital scale, a wrapper with cocaine residue, baggies and other materials, deputies arrested Turner and found on him marijuana, a grinder with loose marijuana and a black digital scale, the report said.

Turner's girlfriend told deputies that she knew he had a criminal record, but did not elaborate, the report said.

Online records from the Florida Department of Corrections show Turner was released from prison in August 2013 after serving time for being convicted of possession of cocaine with intent to sell/deliver and possession of marijuana with intent to sell/deliver.

Man charged in connection with theft

SEBRING - A suspect in the theft of the trailer last year was arrested this week, according to a report released Tuesday.

Johnnie Earl Gallegos, 47, 445 Pomegranate Ave., Sebring, was arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with third-degree grand theft.

The arrest came the trailer was found on a piece of property, the report said.

The owner of the property told authorities that Gallegos had the trailer around the time that it was reported stolen, the report said.

Gallegos denied the theft, the report said. But an expired tag belonging to Gallegos was found on the trailer, the report said.

Man arrested on shoplifting charge

SEBRING - A man suspected of attempting to steal items from Wal-Mart wasn't about to give up when a store employee confronted him, according to a report released Monday.

Three employees ended up having to subdue the man and bring him back into the store, the report said.

William Dale Carroll, 37, 3515 VA Lane, Wauchula, was arrested April 7 and charged with third-degree grand theft and resisting recovery of property.

A security employee saw Carroll leaving the store without paying for the merchandise, the report said.
