Man accused of stealing meat from business

AVON PARK - An Avon Park man provided no explanation when he exited a business with a backpack full of items belonging to the business, according to a report released Monday.

Demetrius T. Battle, 24, 904 S. Pineland Ave., Avon Park, was arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, possession of burglary tools and petit theft.

The arrest came after a deputy responded to a report of a suspicious person and was told the person had apparently entered the Little Angels Adoption Agency through a window, the report said.

Later, Battle was seen leaving the building through a side window with the backpack, the report said.

The backpack contained meat that authorities believe Battle took from a freezer in the business, the report said.
