Woman accused of giving man bogus check

SEBRING - A woman is facing charges that she provided a man a worthless check, according to a report released Monday.

Mary Ann Weeks, 53, 2703 Woodruff Heights, Avon Park, was arrested this past week by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office on a warrant and charged with third-degree grand theft, scheme to defraud, forgery of a public record and uttering a false instrument.

A man had reported that two women, including Weeks, gave a check to deposit into his account. The second woman had vouched for Weeks, saying she had $75,000 or more in her account, the report said. They wanted him to cash the check because they didn't have proper identification, the report said.

The man deposited the check and later withdrew $400, giving $380 of it to Rivera, the report said.

Two days later, the bank notified him the check was worthless.

Man accused of selling cocaine

LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man is accused of selling cocaine, according to a report released Monday.

Maklavius Dion Hill, 25, 117 Vision St., Lake Placid, was arrested during the past week by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with sale/distribution of cocaine and possession of cocaine.

The arrest came after a deputy witnessed a sale of what appeared to be drugs, an arrest report said. The buyer told deputies he bought the cocaine from a man dressed in a gray hoodie and the seller was handed drugs by a man dressed in black.

Later, deputies found Hill, who was dressed in a gray hoodie, in the area, the report said.
