Man hits teen over school grades

SEBRING - A Sebring man was arrested after being accused of striking a 15-year-old boy in the face, according to a report released Thursday.

Carmelo Rivera, 45, no address given, was arrested Oct. 15 by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with aggravated child abuse.

The arrest came after the boy told authorities that Rivera punched him in the face during an argument over the boy's discipline problems in school, the report said.

A deputy saw that the teenager's face had swelled in the left cheek and eye area and that bruising occurred there, the report said.

Man arrested on drug charges

SEBRING - A Sebring man may have learned Wednesday that trying to conceal something after being stopped by a deputy may increase his chances of being arrested.

Ryan Joseph Binger, 20, 408 Faber Court, Sebring, was arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug equipment.

The arrest came after a deputy stopped Binger's vehicle after noticing that it wasn't remaining within one lane of traffic and was going off the roadway, a report said.

After stopping the vehicle, the deputy noticed the driver "attempting to conceal an unknown item within the center of the vehicle," the report said.

Binger appeared to be nervous and was shaking, the report said.

After Binger got out of the vehicle, the deputy found methamphetamine and a pipe, the report said.
