LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man insisted he didn't have drugs on him, but a search proved otherwise, according to a report released Friday.

Eli Cummings Rogers, 41, 13 Lake Stearns Drive, Lake Placid, was arrested Oct. 10 by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with possession of cocaine and possession of drug equipment.

The arrest came after members of the Sheriff's Office Crime Suppression Team were watching an area in Highway Park known for drug activity and saw a man enter and leave about 20 minutes earlier.

Deputies stopped the man, later identified as Rogers, who denied having drugs, the report said.

But after searching him, a deputy found cocaine and a smoking pipe, the report said.

Drug arrest made during failed alleged drug sale

LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man was arrested after Highlands County deputies saw what appeared to be an unsuccessful attempt at selling drugs, according to a report released Friday.

Leroy Quinn English, 30, 223 Heppner Ave., Lake Placid, was arrested Oct. 10 by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with resisting an officer without violence, possession of cocaine and possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana.

Members of Highlands County Crime Suppression Team were surveying a drug area and saw a man approach another man with what appeared to be a bag of cocaine, but the second man didn't buy the suspected cocaine, the report said.

When deputies approached the first man, identified as English, they found marijuana and cocaine, the report said.

Initially, English was apparently trying to conceal the cocaine, the report said. Deputies had to forcibly remove from English from his car, the report said.
