Man accused of stealing a four-wheeler and two motorcycles

SEBRING - Highlands County investigators had to follow a trail involving several sales and a receipt with a fake name before determining a suspect in the theft of a four-wheeler and two motorcycles, according to a report released Wednesday.

John Carroll Meredith, 44, no address given, was arrested July 17 on a warrant and charged with third-degree grand theft, two counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle and dealing in stolen property.

The arrest came after a man reported on April 8 the theft of a trailer containing items that he owned, including the four-wheeler, two motorcycles and personal items.

On May 27, the victim notified the sheriff's office that he had learned that some of the stolen property was at a residence on Golden Road, the report said.

Deputies found the missing four-wheeler there and the owner of the Golden Road house told them that he bought the four-wheeler from his nephew.

The man's nephew told investigators that he bought the four-wheeler from his wife's brother, John Meredith, the report said.

The nephew also told authorities that Meredith gave him a receipt but put a fake name on it, the report added.

The nephew's wife also reported that Meredith stored several items at her residence and those items ended up being from the stolen trailer, the report said.
