County prioritizes road projects

SEBRING - Highlands County commissioners approved two dozen road projects Tuesday that include turn lanes, shoulders, sidewalks, multiuse paths, milling and resurfacing,

The list of priorities has been submitted to Florida Department of Transportation for fiscal years 2014 through 2019.

"This program provides funding for a variety of alternative transportation projects," Ramon Gavarrete told the county commissioners.

In May, the county engineer asked municipalities to submit requests for eligible projects; only Sun N' Lake responded with a request for sidewalk extensions on Sun N' Lake and Columbus boulevards.

FDOT prioritizes projects on the physical condition of the road, whether the road is an evacuation route, whether the road has high levels of agricultural travel, whether the road is considered a major arterial route or feeder, and whether the road is in a fiscally constrained county like Highlands.
