AVON PARK - The condition of a 14-year-old local boy who was injured by a train Monday was upgraded from critical to stable, authorities said in a press release on Tuesday.

Ralph Davis Jr., of 698 N. Lake Ave., Avon Park, remained at Tampa General Hospital, Nell Hays, public information officer for the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, said in the press release.

Ralph suffered a broken pelvis and leg injuries in the accident, Hays said.

Authorities believe he tried to outrun an Amtrak train, but stumbled when he ran in front of the train, Hays said. The train apparently hit his leg, Hays said.

The accident occurred near the railroad tracks and Main Street.
