After being closed for nearly five years, City Pier Beach may reopen this week, city officials said.
City administrator Scott Noethlich said the reopening is pending a final check by the Highlands County Health Department to see if any hazards exist.
A bacterial count resulted in a finding of safe levels, he said.
The beach was closed in 2008 after a swimmer drowned in a dredge hole. Earlier this year that hole was plugged.
Meanwhile, the city announced that the Veteranís Beach boat ramp will be closed for about five hours on Wednesday, May 8, beginning 8 a.m., while a dredge is removed. The dredge was used to make the area deeper so that boats would not get stuck in the sand.
