POLK COUNTY- A 56-year-old Avon Park resident was killed Sunday evening in Polk County after his car went off the road, hit two trees and flipped over, landing on its roof, Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

At 5:29 p.m., Billy King was driving a blue 2003 Dodge Neon and going in the outside lane of northbound U.S. 27 North, approaching the intersection of Gum Road, which is near the Camp Inn Mobile Home Park, states a news release.

Witnesses told authorities that King, for no apparent reason, slowly went off the road to the right, and continued going north down the shoulder, sideswiping a tree

The Neon then rotated, struck another tree and flipped over onto its roof, eventually facing south, the news release adds.

King was the only occupant and was wearing a seat-belt. Emergency medical responders pronounced him dead on the scene, the news release adds.

Authorities closed down the northbound road to one lane for several hours during the investigation for safety purposes.

The investigation is ongoing.
