Avon Park man killed near football field

Published:

AVON PARK - The body of Dwayne Terrance Council Jr., 21, was found early Saturday morning near the high school football stadium.

"At approximately 4:30 a.m." said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Nell Hays, "a passerby found a black male lying injured in the street."

Highlands County deputies and EMS responded to the 200 block of East State St. in the street adjacent to Joe Franza Stadium. They found the victim, who is the son of a popular football and track coach, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies found and marked evidence in the street, and evidence technicians also photographed a dirt field south of the road.

"Detectives are working this case as a potential homicide, gathering all evidence and information pending the medical examiner's review," Hays said.
