AVON PARK -

Under the leadership of Avon Park High School Head Cheer Coach Tammy Williams, the school’s cheerleaders are in their second year of rebuilding a competition team after many years of having no such team.

This team allows an opportunity for the cheerleaders to competitively perform routines against other high schools across the state.

At the regional level, the team placed second out of eight teams. They also placed 11th out of 24 teams and scored just tenths of a point away from eight place, which would have qualified them for the state finals.

The competition team competed in the small non-tumbling division for their class.

The 13 members of this team were a mixture of junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders and included Roxanne Guerndt, Jaden Hancock, Jocelyn Jackson, Juliana Jackson, Kelsey Knowles, Marche Lawton, Genesis Moro, Madison New, Taylor Ritchie, Shelby Votaw, Caylie Wall and Jordan Wright.

The junior varsity cheerleaders for 2012-13 received an athletic certificate and were Jocelyn Jackson, Acuria Smith, Madison New, Jaden Hancock, Alexandra McSorley, Francesca Pemble, Sierra Joseph, Jasmine Johnson, Annissa Collier, Deonjai Smith.

The varsity cheerleaders for 2012-13 received two different awards.

For those, the cheerleaders completing their first year on varsity -- including Niesha Brown, Hannah Farr, Morgan Hamilton, Taylor Hedrick, Brooke Jackson, Juliana Jackson, Ricoby Jefferson, Kaitlyn McNeil, Renee Mondesir, Genesis Moro, Taylor Ritchie, and Shelby Luke -- members received a letter and a megaphone. Second-year varsity cheerleaders Tiffany Albright, Roxanne Guerndt, Kelsie Jahna, Marche Lawton, Shelby Votaw, Caylie Wall, and Jordan Wright were awarded a second-year bar for their letters.

The APHS 2013-14 cheerleaders will be holding their first fundraiser of the year June 10-13, as they hold a cheerleading clinic for those ages 4 to eight grade from 8 a.m. to noon each day.

The $40 cost includes a T-shirt as well as the opportunity to cheer at an APHS home football game in the fall.
