LAKE PLACID- Two people were killed and one suffered serious injuries after a two-vehicle collision at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday on State Road 70, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Authorities have not released the names of the deceased, who were both traveling in a Toyota Scion, pending notification of next of kin. The driver was a 74-year-old female from West Palm Beach and her passenger a 79-year-old from Delray Beach, according to a FHP report.

Christina Maria Kern, 37, of Ortonville, Mich.,was going east on S.R. 70, just east of Kemper Terrace, when she abruptly veered left into the west bound lane for an unknown reason, and ran headlong into the Toyota, which was going west, the FHP report states.

The driver of the Toyota tried to avoid a collision and veered right, the FHP adds. The two vehicles collided and the Jeep rotated in a counter clockwise direction, coming to rest on the west bound lane facing north.

The Toyota traveled north into a water-filled ditch, coming to rest of the right side, authorities add.

Both the driver and her passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by Seminole Fire and Rescue, the report adds.

Kern was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Ft. Pierce. The report listed her in serious condition.
