Dragons storm the links

LAKE PLACID - Placid Lakes Country Club hosted nearly 80 golfers on Saturday for the fourth annual Green Dragons Golf Scramble. Sponsored by Lake Placid High School, the tournament serves as the school's biggest fundraiser for its baseball team.

"We had great turnout," said Placid Lakes Director of Golf Travis Harstine. "Turnout was great and it's always for a good cause - the Dragons baseball team."

There were two flights composed of 76 golfers and the groups competed in the four-person scramble, and each team included a sponsor. The first flight, sponsored by Heartland National Bank, was won by Kerry Thompson, Jason Rogers, Sam Rogers, and Tripp Watters, who combined to finish 16-under par for the day's best score, a 56.

The Sebring Firemen sponsored the second place team, comprised of Curtis Welde, Jonathan Spiegel, Robert Freeland, and John Gose, who finished with a 58.

In third place at 10-under par was the team of Gary Williams, Darin Sapp, Mike Moore, and Warren Paige. The quartet combined to shoot a 62. They group was sponsored by Williams Spreader Service.

In the second flight, sponsored by The Andersons, Billy Bonecutter, Ryan Brewer, Craig High, and Josh Lowder finished a respectable 7-under par to finish with a 65.

Team C&C came in second, and was made up of Terry Coyne, Jackie Coyne, Scott Canady, and Andy Canady. The group shot a 66 for a 6-under par.

Alan Warner, Mike Warner, Michael Warner, and Rocco Warner were sponsored by Holiday Inn Express, and finished third, also with a 66, but placed third due to matching cards.

Along with playing 18 holes, there was also a longest drive competition and closest to the pin contest.

Jonathan Spiegel won the longest drive competition, while Sam Rogers and Rocco Mediate finished closest to the pin on the No. 2 and No. 13 holes, respectively.
