AVON PARK - The Avon Park boys and girls hosted matches at River Greens Golf Club on Thursday.
The Red Devil boys shot a four-person team score of 196 for nine holes to edge Fort Meade which had a score of 260.
It's good to start the season with a win," said first-year Avon Park boys golf coach Jason Beatty. "We were missing a few guys but the ones that played stepped up and got it done."
Avon Park sophomore Brooks Whidden carded a team-best 40, Leighton Jahna shot a 45, Cody Pearlman carded a 46 and Charles Sutherland rounded out the team scoring with a 65.
"We had some solid scores but we left a few shots out on the course," said Beatty, who is also the head professional at River Greens. "We haven't had much time to practice because of the rain and I'm sure we'll have some lower scores once we get a chance to work on our games."
The Avon Park girls team competed in a tri-match which lake Wales won with a four-person team score of 235, Avon Park placed second with a 263 and Haines City came in with a 289.
Red Devil senior Kim Norton led the way with a 61, Danielle Roque shot a 62, Brooke Scranton came in with a 65 and Katelyn Blalock finished with a 73.
"It's good to get that first win," said veteran Red Devil girls golf coach Suzie Gentry. "We don't have a lot of girls out for the team this year, but the ones playing are working very hard on their games.
"Winning a match should give our girls a boost of confidence."
In other action on the links, the Sebring boys golf team improved to 2-0 on the season with a victory over Lakeland on Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Streaks had a four-person team score of 154 for nine holes while the Dreadnaughts came in at 159.
Sebring junior Jeremy Camino and Nic Staffieri paced Sebring with 37s, while Ben Tubbs and Lee Hinote carded 40s to round out the team scoring.
This was the second time in a week that Sebring was about to knock off Lakeland.
"That's a good team score for us," said Sebring boys golf coach Vince Liles. "A 37 is a good score on any course and both of those 40s could have been lower.
"We're off to a good start to the season and we jus have to stay focused and keep working to improve our games."
Sebring and Avon Park are both in Class 2A-District 18 this year and the Red Devils get to host the boys and girls district tournaments at River Greens Golf Club.
The Blue Streaks are back in action on Tuesday with an away match in Haines City while the Avon Park girls squad is home again on Sept. 10 with a tri-match against Lake Wales and Hardee. The Red Devil boys are at Winter Haven on Tuesday.
