Speaker to discuss Ais civilization

AVON PARK - "Ais, Footprints to Oblivion" will be presented by David R. McDonald at 7 p.m. Thursday in Building G, Room 101 at South Florida State College. The free presentation is part of the Kissimmee Valley Archaeological and Historic Conservancy's Speaker Series.

"Ais, Footprints to Oblivion" is an overview of the Ais civilization, with emphasis on their material culture. The Ais were a prehistoric tribe found on the Eastern Atlantic Florida Coast.

What we know about the tribe comes from the writings of Jonathan Dickenson after being shipwrecked in their territory. The survivors were stripped of all possessions and clothing and taken to the town of Hobe, where Fontenada, a Spanish captive of the Indians, described the Jeaga Indians.
