DUBROVNIK, Croatia (AP) — The Turkish Football Federation believes it is "top of the list" to host the 2020 European Championship final.
Emre Alkin, the federation's general secretary, tells The Associated Press that UEFA President Michel Platini "promised us" in January that Istanbul would "surely" stage the final and semifinals if the city lost the 2020 Olympics hosting race. The IOC chose Tokyo this month.
UEFA should announce on Friday the applicants to host Euro 2020, which will be played in 13 countries.
Alkin says he expects "three or four" of UEFA's 54 member countries to compete for the final package.
He says Spain and Hungary are possible candidates, with UEFA choosing the winner next September.
Alkin says the Ataturk Olympic Stadium would be upgraded to hold 80,000 spectators at the tournament.
