ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The last time the Pittsburgh Pirates had a winning season, Barry Bonds was in the middle of their lineup.
That was 1992, when Doug Drabek was the ace of a rotation that included a rookie knuckleballer named Tim Wakefield.
But now there is a new group of winning Pirates.
The Pirates earned their 82nd victory, ensuring their first winning record in 21 seasons, with a 1-0 win Monday night at Texas.
Outfielder Marlon Byrd, one of the newest Pirates, says Pittsburgh fans have been waiting a long time for this. He says this team is giving the city something to cheer about.
But they also aren't done.
Closer Jason Grilli says 82 wins wasn't the goal. The Pirates want a division title and their first World Series appearance since the 1979 championship.
