Democrats to start nominating statewide candidates

LANSING, Mich. (AP) Michigan Democrats meet in Lansing this weekend to nominate candidates for attorney general, secretary of state and other statewide offices on the fall ballot.

Some nominations will be decided Saturday, while most will be done Sunday.

No contested race is expected for gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer's running mate Lisa Brown. Michigan State University associate law professor Mark Totten faces no challenge in his bid for attorney general. Neither does Detroit attorney Godfrey Dillard for secretary of state.

Democrats may fight, however, over state appeals Judge William Murphy's bid for one of three Supreme Court nominations. His anti-abortion views are drawing concerns from activists, though it's unclear if a candidate will emerge to challenge him.

The party is hoping to break Republican control of state government in the November election.
