JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Democrats have endorsed Byron Mallott (muh-LOT') for governor.
The move by the party's state central committee is unusual prior to a primary. The candidate filing deadline for the 2014 race is not until June.
The party, in a release, says this is the earliest it's voted to endorse a gubernatorial candidate. It said members expressed support for Mallott's years of public service, business experience and "progressive" values.
Party chairman Mike Wenstrup said Mallott's commitment to working with and listening to all Alaskans is an approach that Democrats fully support.
Mallott officially launched his candidacy last week.
Other candidates includes Republican Gov. Sean Parnell, who is seeking re-election, and Bill Walker, who finished second to Parnell in the 2010 GOP primary and plans to run this time as an independent.
